In the Barrett group, we believe that science thrives when everyone feels welcome, supported, and valued. Our research group is built on the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and we actively cultivate a space where people from all backgrounds can contribute, grow, and succeed.
We recognize that systemic barriers have historically limited participation of women, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), and people with disabilities in STEM. Our lab is committed to breaking down these barriers by:
Recruiting and mentoring a diverse group of researchers, from undergraduates to postdocs.
Fostering collaboration, mentorship, and open communication, tailored to individual needs.
Promoting work-life balance, mental well-being, and respect for personal boundaries.
Maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment, or exclusion.
Mentorship in the Barrett group is holistic and personalized. We support team members in navigating academic challenges while encouraging independence, creativity, and leadership. Everyone is empowered to share ideas, ask questions, and explore research directions that excite them.
We are committed to extending support beyond the lab and inspiring young scientists through outreach programs and mentorship initiatives. This includes participating in activities such as science festivals, school visits, and mentorship programs that reduce financial and systemic barriers for students in STEM.
Team Building and Community
We believe that strong science starts with strong relationships. To foster connection, collaboration, and fun, the lab hosts regular events throughout the year:
Annual celebrations for holidays, birthdays, and seasonal milestones
Summer BBQs and group dinners to celebrate achievements
Themed parties, like Halloween, to let creativity (and costumes) run wild
Spontaneous coffee breaks, snack-sharing, and dog cuddles courtesy of our emotional support staff
Our culture is grounded in respect, collaboration, curiosity, and inclusion. We believe that diverse perspectives make our science stronger, our ideas sharper, and our team happier. Everyone who joins the lab, whether they are starting their first research project or leading a new initiative, is valued and supported.
